Overview
Coconut-based farming systems is an integration of diverse agricultural revenue generating activities, under coconut. It maximizes farm production and is a sustainable and viable approach that increases wealth and improves livelihood.
WHY FARMING SYSTEMS
Copra production has been declining due to price instability, palm senility, land scarcity and issues
relating to climate change. Affecting livelihood and increasing poverty rate in the coconut growing regions
of PNG. Farming systems maximize farm revenue and addresses land scarcity and food security
whilst minimizing the impact of climate change on farm production.
IMPORTANCE OF LAND MANGEMENT
Intensive land management is vital as the same land will be used over decades and down through generations.
It is a climate smart farming practice that enhances adequate distribution of major abiotic factors
such as soil nutrient, sun and water for the effective up taking of the farm produce.
This will increase the overall farm production.
CLIMATE SMART FARMING PRACTICES
Performs the core function of KIK. It specifically provides the technical services in the areas of Export Inspections, License inspections, Economics and Market analysis, Statistical Complication and Dissemination, Copra Quality Training and Project Development.
